A special section is now open for submissions. Authors are invited to contribute manuscripts for consideration through the journal’s independent submission and peer-review process.

An open call for journal contributions, with a dedicated submission system and rigorous peer review.

Open to All Authors

The call for papers is open to everyone. Contributions are welcome from a broad range of countries, institutions, companies, and researchers working in the topic area.

Independent Journal Submission

Submit manuscripts through the JEI manuscript submission and peer-review system. Conference submissions and journal submissions use different systems and review processes.

All manuscripts undergo full journal peer review. The journal editor has the final authority on publication decisions.

Important Dates & Publication Timeline

Original Submission Deadline

March 1, 2027

Submit the original manuscript by this date for consideration in the special section.

Final Acceptance Deadline

September 30, 2027

The review and revision process must lead to final acceptance by this deadline.

Initial Review & Decision: The goal is to complete the first round of reviews and send the initial decision within 6 weeks of receiving the submission.
Revision & Re-review: Revision and further review cycles will take place as needed.
Guest Editorial: Due after the final paper is accepted, or no later than September 30, 2027.
Online Publication: The online issue will open once a critical mass of accepted papers is reached, usually 3–5 papers. Individual articles will then appear online as soon as copyediting, typesetting, and proofing are complete.

Submission & Peer Review

How to Submit

Read the official special section call for papers and check the topic scope.
Prepare your manuscript according to the JEI author guidelines, including formatting and submission requirements.
Submit through the JEI submission system by March 1, 2027, following the journal’s special section instructions.

Review Process

All manuscripts must undergo full and rigorous peer review to determine their suitability for publication in JEI. The journal recommends review by at least two experts in the field.

Guest editors evaluate reviewer comments and make manuscript decisions, subject to the journal editor’s final authority. Revisions and re-review may be required.

Any manuscript co-authored by a guest editor must be handled by a co-editor who is not an author, the journal editor, or the journal editor’s designee.

Open Access & Review Articles

Publication Options

Authors who choose open access publication are required to pay an open access fee upon acceptance.

Authors who do not choose open access are not required to pay article processing charges.

Invited Review Papers

Review articles are encouraged as valuable introductions to the special section’s topic area. SPIE will subsidize the open access fee for invited review papers.

Authors of invited review papers can contact the editorial office about this support.
